Sylvia's first memory was sitting at the kitchen table drawing when she was two years old. Drawing has stuck with her and remains a natural and consistent part of her life.

After receiving a BFA from Ball State University specialized in drawing in 1984, Sylvia moved on to waiting tables and picture framing, from Cleveland, Ohio and Miami, Florida, to San Francisco. She also worked on different aspects of her art through this time. From black and white, and hand-colored photography, figure drawing, to monotype printing, exploration of techniques has kept art-making a never ending learning experience for her.

Traveling has been an important part of Sylvia's life and art. After college she spent time traveling throughout Europe. In 1988 she moved from Coconut Grove, Florida to San Francisco. Between 1991 and 1998 she visited Costa Rica, Canada, Cuba and spent six months exploring Southeast Asia, on her own. The light, color, smells and sounds of the tropics in all its glory, has greatly influenced Sylvia's work.

In 2001 Sylvia's daughter Lucia was born, and she has more than anything else, strengthened Sylvia's commitment to her work as an artist.

"Simple composition and bold contrast of color is what my work is about. Playing with color, watching light move and change is a meditation for me. I use pastels primarily for the rich soft color, but enjoy mixing mediums as well, such as monotype and collage."
