Working with The California Department of Parks and Recreation, the Museum Director and staff of Hearst San Simeon State
Historical Monument, Dallas A. Saunders Studio is pleased to bring you resources for product design and licensing inspired
by Hearst Castle.
Hearst Castle, also known as San Simeon, was once the private home of publisher William Randolph Hearst. The estate, now
a National Historic Landmark, overlooking the spectacular California coast has been visited by over thirty-six million people
since it opened to the public as a California State Park. It is the shared design endeavor of architect Julia Morgan and William
Randolph Hearst. Craftsmen labored for twenty-eight years under their direction to combine architectural design and the collections
of Mr. Hearst into La Cuesta Encantada "The Enchanted Hill”.
165 pristine rooms designed around copious art and antiques, 127 acres of terraced sculpture gardens, two of the worlds most
spectacular swimming pools, and a legendary guest list, make Hearst Castle a remarkable design resource.
"It's the most distinctive house in America. Certainly there are larger private residences (for instance, Biltmore, the 250-room
Vanderbilt chateau) and more formal, more predictable or more opulent ones (any number of Palm Beach piles or Newport "cottages"
spring to mind). But there's not a mansion on either side of the Mississippi that can hold a candelabra to Hearst Castle,
in San Simeon, California, for sheer exuberance and bravura spirit." - Town & Country Magazine
