Chris Henry - Artist Statement
My work is the reflection of my evolution using primarily texture and line to communicate. Although I seek to be original
in my work, artists from the Abstract Expressionism movement, in particular Robert Rauschenberg, inform the way in which I
communicate.
Ideas come to me from everywhere. A shape in nature, something man made, or perhaps a color strikes me and the idea germinates
while I gather my materials. The idea is simple to begin with develops, then unfolds as I work the medium into the foundation.
That foundation consists of mud glued to muslin, glazed and then stretched and cracked to create depth and character. This
foundation is then affixed to birch wood, providing the skeleton upon which I create. I see veils as I layer color upon color
and then work back through the paint, pulling out whatever lies beneath the surface. The mystery behind what is apparent
drives me forward as the painting reveals what my soul wants to convey. Although texture and line compose my work, the strong
vibrant color provides movement, rendering the pieces whole.
